Breaking Ground!

Will it drain?

After the demolition of the shed and room on the back of the house we are all ready to break ground and start on the drain to the back of the property. This will drain all around the foundation. It's amazing how wet this spring has been so I hope it works. This work also includes removing the old septic tank which is right in the way. We think it is the best thing to do since it is so old and small.

That is groundwater!

The septic tank was quite small. It had been pumped out a few days before but all the groundwater actually seeped into it! To drain this out the trank hoe had to move to the end of the ditch and work back. Since this drain is at the bottom of the foundation, the pipe will be about 13' in the ground! It better work.

Is OSHA watching??

Cave in

The drain digging was a rather interesting adventure. The ground seemed dry enough for the heavy equipment to not make much of a mess but when it started to dig it was a different story. The septic tank filling up was the start. The track hoe operator was having a bit of a time. He had the trench dug with no problem. The depth was the straw. It had to be almost 13' and sides just didn't hold and collapsed as we all watched. He had to dig the thing back out increase the width and in the end we had the ditch almost 8' wide in places all for a 6" pipe!!

The good thing is that we got our pipe installed, no one got hurt and we have a super layer of topsoil!

With this part done they'll move on to digging the foundation.

More to come!
